| Anthony D. Whittemore, MD


Dr. Anthony D. Whittemore, a native of Boston, received his medical degree from Columbia University, College of Physicians & Surgeons, and completed his general surgical training in New York City at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in 1976. Following a Vascular Fellowship at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, he served in the US Navy as Chief of Vascular Surgery for the Sixth Fleet at the Naval Regional Medical Center, Portsmouth, Virginia. He then returned to Boston in 1979 and joined the faculty at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital.

Dr. Whittemore was appointed Director of the Surgical Residency Training Program from 1980 to 1991 and, subsequently, Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery at the Brigham and Women's Hospital from 1990–2003. Dr. Whittemore has served as Vice-Chair of the Department of Surgery and is Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. His scientific interests have concentrated on various aspects of the adaptive response of autogenous vein grafts, most recently incorporating applications of gene therapy. Dr. Whittemore maintains a surgical practice focused on aortic arterial reconstruction.

Dr. Whittemore assumed the position of Chief Medical Officer in 1999 having served as Chairman of both Medical Staff Executive and Quality Assurance/Risk Management Committees, as well as Director of the multidisciplinary BWH Vascular Center. This role provided an opportunity to initiate several hospital wide programs including the application of bar code technology for medication administration, implementation of a web-based medical error reporting system, and the creation of a professionalism program, Center for Bioethics and a physician leadership program in conjunction with Harvard Business School.

Dr. Whittemore is a member of 20 professional societies including the American Medical Association, American College of Surgeons, American Surgical Association, Society of University Surgeons, and has served as President of the Boston Surgical Society, New England Society for Vascular Surgery, and the Society for Vascular Surgery. He is currently serving as President of the American Surgical Association.

Dr. Whittemore's publications exceed 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers and an equal number of textbook chapters and educationally relevant material. He served on the editorial boards of numerous publications including the Journal of Vascular Surgery, the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, Vascular Surgery, and Cardiovascular Surgery. He served as Editor-in-Chief of Advances in Vascular Surgery from its inception in 1991 until 2001.
