The Center for Patient Safety Research and Practice is the premier convener of patient safety scientists and investigators from academia, government, industry and healthcare. Based at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, the Center is a multi-institutional organization that works to improve the overall quality of healthcare through scientifically proven systems, methods and practices.
The Center is led by Executive Director David Westfall Bates, MD, MSc, Associate Director Gordon Schiff, MD and Project Director Carol Keohane, RN.
In recognition of the importance of his contributions, Dr. Bates was appointed to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in 2005, and he is now leading the research agenda in patient safety for the Global Alliance for Patient Safety sponsored by the World Health Organization.
John M. Eisenberg Award for Patient Safety Research
The Eisenberg Award recognizes major achievements of individuals and organizations in improving patient safety and quality. To date, three of the Center's Executive Council Members have received this prestigious award: David W. Bates, (2002) Research; Lucian Leape, (2004) Individual Achievement; Jerry Gurwitz, (2006) Research.
