| Joyce Clifford, PhD, RN, FAAN
Joyce C. Clifford, PhD, RN, FAAN, served as Senior Vice President and Nurse-in-Chief at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston for more than 25 years before establishing The Institute for Nursing Healthcare Leadership, Inc. (INHL) for which she now serves as the president and chief executive officer. A graduate of St. Anselm College, she received her masters in nursing from the University of Alabama and a doctorate in the field of Health Planning and Policy Analysis at the Heller School of Brandeis University. She became a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing in 1980, is a former President of the American Organization of Nurse Executives and was a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Hospital Association from 1991 to 1994. She remains a member of multiple professional organizations, as well as a trustee for her alma mater, Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire.
Dr. Clifford is regularly described as the architect of nursing's professional practice model — a model that has been recognized nationally and internationally in hospital and in out-patient/community services. This practice model has been studied and emulated by nurses and health administrators around the world (Australia, New Zealand, Israel, England, Scotland, Germany, Netherlands, Kenya, Thailand, China, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and all of the Scandinavian countries)
Her leadership has been recognized with Sigma Theta Tau's Founder's Award for Promoting High Professional Standards (1982), Clairol's Distinguished Mentor Award (1990), the Award of Honor of the American Hospital Association (1990), the National Nurse Executive Leadership Award of the American Organization of Nurse Executives (1996), three honorary degrees , the Lifetime Achievement Award of the American Organization of Nurse Executives (2003), the AACN-Marguerite Rodgers Kinney Award for a Distinguished Career of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (2004), a Living Legend Award from the American Academy of Nursing (2005) and recipient of the Living Legend in Massachusetts Nursing Award presented by the Massachusetts Association of Registered Nurses (2007).
Dr. Clifford has held leadership positions on many boards and special programs — e.g., American Organization of Nurse Executives (president), American Journal of Nursing Publishing Company (board chair), the American Hospital Association, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on the Adequacy of Nurse Staffing, The Council on the Economic Impact of Health Care Reform, Strengthening Hospital Nursing Program (RWJ/Pew), and The RWJ Executive Nurse Fellowship Program. Her book Restructuring: The Impact of Hospital Organization on Nursing Leadership was frequently cited in the 2004 IOM report on patient safety.
