As Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer for Caremark L.L.C., Jan Berger, MD, is responsible for physician oversight of Caremark's Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee; the company's clinical strategy and initiatives; its sales and account management team; governmental and lobbyist activities; and technology initiatives, which include ePrescribing and Internet activities, product development, and disease management. Dr. Berger joined Caremark in August 1999.
Dr. Berger is a board-certified pediatrician with clinical experience in private, managed care, and academic medicine. Prior to assuming her current role, she served as medical director for managed care at Children's Memorial Hospital. Before that, she spent 13 years at Rush Prudential Health Plans. There she held a variety of positions, including medical director for quality management as well as company medical director.
Considered a national thought leader, Dr. Berger speaks and writes on medical liability, managed care, healthcare technology, disease management, healthcare quality, pharmacy benefit management, and specialty medication issues. She also serves on the editorial advisory boards of several healthcare journals, including Disease Management , Managed Care , Health and Productivity Management, and the Journal of Managed Care Medicine.
Dr. Berger serves as a board or committee member for the Institute of Health and Productivity Management, the Disease Management Association of America, the National Committee on Quality Assurance, and the National Association of Managed Care Physicians. She is a “black belt” in Six Sigma, designating her as a team leader responsible for implementing process improvement projects within business to increase customer satisfaction and business productivity.
Dr. Berger holds both a Doctor of Medicine degree and a Masters degree in Jurisprudence from Loyola University in Chicago and has taken numerous courses in business management. She is also an assistant professor at Northwestern University School of Medicine in Evanston, Illinois.
